How to Prepare Soil Before Laying Grass

Jagdamba Nursery

Good soil preparation is one of the biggest reasons a new lawn succeeds or fails. Even the best grass variety can struggle if the base layer is uneven, compacted, or too hard for root growth.

Start by clearing the area properly, removing weeds, debris, and loose stones. After that, level the ground and till the top layer enough to loosen it without creating large pockets. This allows the grass roots to spread and anchor more easily.

If the soil is very hard or compacted, it may need light loosening before grass is laid. The goal is not to create a soft sponge, but to create a stable, breathable surface that still holds moisture well.

The soil should be evenly leveled and lightly moist before installation. If it is too dry, the grass may root slowly. If it is too muddy, the roots may struggle to anchor. A balanced base gives your lawn the best chance to establish strongly.
